Export ban stops RAF Victoria Cross from taking off abroad | Information

A “nationally important” Victoria Cross is banned from being exported after it was sold at auction for £680,000 to a foreign buyer.

The gallantry medal was one of 22 awarded to the RAF during the Second World War and the only one for action in the Far East.

Squadron Leader Arthur Scarf was granted the honor after he died single-handedly attacking a heavily defended Japanese airbase in Malaya.

Scarf's medal group included the Defense and War medals, Pacific Star and 1939-45 Star

His Bristol Blenheim light bomber came under intense fire. He drifted in and out of consciousness as he tried to fly back to base. He landed in a paddy field and was rushed to the hospital where his wife, Sally, a nurse pregnant with their child, was based. He later died of his wounds.
