Household comes by means of for Oak Bay Kiwanis Dementia Nursing Residence – Victoria Information

The generosity and heart of the Kiwanis Pavilion families kept the dementia care home on track and residents programming during the toughest leg of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now that we’re getting a little out of it, let’s start talking about different types of fundraising,” said Leslie Johnston, chair of the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation.

Fundraising typically includes breakfast at the Willows Beach Tea Room January through April, an annual shredding fundraiser, and a brick sponsorship program. The organizers are hoping to host the annual shredder event this year and have done some small breakfast sales before closing the store due to health and safety measures of a pandemic. Up until that point, the egg sandwiches to go were a hit, Johnston said.

“We made $ 1,000 or something that wasn’t to be sniffed at. But it didn’t take long. “

The foundation was established in 1989 to generate and manage donations to support the residents of the Kiwanis Pavilion. In recent years the foundation has funded things like music therapy, safe therapeutic gardens, and facility modernization.

“Our foundation family, the residents’ families, have been absolutely exceptional with their donations,” said Johnston.

For example, some were specifically dedicated to personal protective equipment, but still found funding to buy a bus that was purchased in late 2020.

They have also acquired some cutting-edge programs, hosted an Easter event for residents, and plan to have an outdoor employee appreciation day this summer.

“You were amazing throughout this whole thing,” said Johnston.

This spring, loved ones were greeted again with strict restrictions. While provincial protocols kept them from personal visits, a daily newsletter was sent out with tidbits from inside – to keep families in touch.

The foundation is preparing for next year and is eagerly watching minutes with ideas for galas and of course the return of breakfast at Willows.
