Lady arrested after hammer assault on condominium constructing in downtown Victoria

Victoria Police arrested a woman after a man was attacked with a hammer.

Police were called to a condominium on the 800 block of Johnson Street between Blanshard and Quadra Streets at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The man was not seriously injured and the suspect had barricaded himself in a suite in the complex.

She refused to communicate with officials, so the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, including crisis negotiators, were called in, police said.

After several hours, the team used loud distraction devices and the woman showed up around 9:30 p.m. She refused to follow instructions but was taken into custody after officers used less lethal ammunition.

The woman was taken to hospital for psychological evaluation and treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

She has since been given a court hearing and has been released. A charge of assault with a gun is recommended.
