New resort in downtown Victoria will get recommendation OK

Victoria is expecting its first new hotel in about two decades.

City councils have approved a project by developer Merchant House Capital to build a triangular tower on the corner of Fort and Blanshard Streets that would house a 20-story hotel as well as commercial and office space.

The hotel plans envisage 128 units with kitchenettes and flexible living spaces that are suitable for business travelers and long-term guests.

The plan includes the listed property and renovation of the neighboring property, the three-story 1912 Montrose Apartments at View and Blanshard Street. The developer has offered to keep the 21 units of the building as a rental property for 60 years and intends to keep the commercial space at street level.

Paul Nursey, CEO of Destination Greater Victoria, said the “architecturally beautiful” building will be the first new hotel in the city in about 20 years.

The Oswego Hotel, Magnolia Hotel and Spa, and Victoria Marriott Inner Harbor are some of the city’s newest hotels.

“This allows us to really bid on more large conferences and off-season sporting events, knowing that we have the capacity to host them. So it was necessary, ”said Nursey.

There’s no confirmed hotel operator or construction schedule yet, said David Fullbrook, CEO of Merchant House Capital.
