Victorian COVID-19 Response Commander Jeroen Weimar says the Caroline Springs area in northwest Melbourne is still the biggest concern for health officials.

“The area that worries us most today is Caroline Springs and remains Caroline Springs,” he said at the press conference this morning.

“[As] We discussed it a little yesterday, we have now seen 25 cases related to the Caroline Springs Square shopping mall in a number of different retail units and people.

“May I just add my thanks for all of the retailers and stores in the mall. I know that having to be part of an exposure site is incredibly stressful. The companies concerned are not at fault, let alone the persons concerned. “

Half of the 20 local cases in Victoria today are related to the Caroline Springs outbreak.

Victorian Department of Health’s assistant secretary Kate Matson expressed concern about the cluster, saying two of the new mall-related cases were not workers or close contacts and authorities had not yet determined exactly how they got infected.

“These two cases were quite late last night, so the interviews on these two cases continue today,” she said.

“What we don’t know yet is whether the transmission was fleeting, perhaps in one of the common areas around the toilets or elsewhere. [or whether it was] walking past someone nearby or whether they were going to one of these identified retail locations.

“But before we receive further information on exposure locations, it will of course be updated on this website.”
