Repeal of Public Well being Measures Decrease Unemployment Charge in Better Victoria Space – Saanich Information

The Victoria Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) unemployment rate fell nearly a full percent last month.

The working conditions in the week of June 13-19 resulted in an unemployment rate in the region of 5.4 percent compared to 6.3 percent in the same reference period in May.

The decrease largely reflects the lifting of public health measures. “Most indoor and outdoor dining, recreational and cultural activities, retail outlets and personal care services have resumed or continued with varying capacity constraints in eight provinces (including British Columbia),” it said.

Local numbers underline this development. The number of working residents in Victoria rose by a total of 4,000 to 214,200 with significant increases in the service sector. Within this sector, 1,300 jobs have been created through accommodation and catering services, while companies providing professional, scientific and technical services have created a further 1,200 jobs. Generally speaking, the hotel and restaurant sector has created 6,300 jobs since February.

Information, culture and leisure, another sector severely affected by COVID-19 measures, has created 2,900 jobs since February 2021.

On the other side of the equation, the health care and welfare sectors are losing jobs. While around 29,900 people were employed in this sector in February, 3,000 fewer were employed in June.

In particular, local unemployment figures reflect the state before the additional relaxation of public health measures announced on July 1.

Compared to the rest of the province, the regional unemployment rate was 6.6 percent after seven percent. Of the four CMAs in British Columbia, the Victoria CMA had the lowest unemployment ahead of Abbotsford Mission (5.7 percent), Kelowna (6.3 percent) and Vancouver (7.5 percent). Compared to other CMAs around the country, Victoria CMA ranks high, with Trois-Rivieres in Quebec having an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent.

The national unemployment rate was 7.8 percent, a decrease of 0.4 percent.
